A Glimpse into American History
Padanaram’s character is deeply rooted in its 350-year legacy. The land was originally part of a 1652 purchase from the Wampanoag people. While the town of Dartmouth was officially chartered in 1664, the village was known by its Wampanoag name, Ponagansett, until 1828. It was then that prominent resident Laban Thatcher introduced the name Padanaram.
The village’s resilience is a point of local pride, having survived multiple conflicts:
- King Philip’s War: The area faced destruction during attacks in the late 1600s.
- The Revolutionary War: In 1778, British forces burned most of the village as revenge against resident patriot Elihu Akin, who had chased out British loyalists.
