What I’ve Learned Growing Up In Real Estate

Mar 24, 2026 | Behind the Brokerage, Let's Learn, RI and MA Real Estate Topics

A Next-Generation Perspective on Real Estate, Work Ethic, and Building Something That Lasts

Growing up around real estate offers a unique perspective on what it truly takes to build a successful, relationship-driven business. Five years ago, on March 1, 2021, Homes By Connect opened its doors. It was a time of uncertainty—amid a global pandemic, shifting markets, and so many unknowns. In that moment, my mom, Katy Donovan, made the decision to take a leap of faith. She believed not only in herself, but in the kind of brokerage she knew was possible—and in the agents who would grow alongside her.

As her daughter (and now as an agent within the office), I’ve had a unique perspective on what it truly took to build Homes By Connect from the ground up. I witnessed the long days spent assembling desks, organizing a brand-new space, and shaping every detail of the brand. I was lucky enough to be part of some of those early moments, helping wherever I could.

Built on More Than Transactions

But what many people didn’t see were the quieter, behind-the-scenes efforts—the time spent thinking deeply about how to best support clients, empower agents, and create something rooted in more than just transactions. From the very beginning, Katy was intentional about building a culture centered on connection, collaboration, and communication—the same values that continue to guide our team and support every agent within the brokerage.

Connection, in particular, is at the heart of everything she does—hence the name Homes By Connect. Whether it’s sending handwritten home anniversary cards, dropping off seasonal treats to neighbors, or bringing everyone together for monthly office meetings, Katy consistently prioritizes meaningful relationships.

Real estate is not just about buying and selling homes—it’s about people, trust, and community.

She leads by example, showing all of us that real estate is not just about buying and selling homes—it’s about people, trust, and community. It’s not uncommon to see her at the post office, mailing thoughtful notes to her sphere—reinforcing the personal touch that sets our office apart.

Throughout my life, and especially over these past five years, I’ve seen firsthand what dedication and consistency can accomplish. Katy shows up every single day—often seven days a week—bringing the kind of energy and commitment this profession demands. That same mindset is reflected in the incredible agents who make up Homes By Connect and The Donovan Group.

Of all those accomplishments, one stands out most to me: Katy being named 2025 Realtor of the Year this past fall. It was a moment that felt both incredibly special and entirely deserved—a reflection of years of hard work, integrity, and genuine care for both clients and colleagues.

There are countless reasons to be proud of what Homes By Connect has become over the past five years. For me, it’s not just about the growth or the recognition—it’s about the culture, the people, and the values that have been built along the way.

I feel incredibly lucky to be part of this team—not only as an agent, but as someone who has witnessed this journey from the very beginning. If the first five years are any indication, the future is even more exciting—for our clients, our team, and those who may one day be part of it.
